This is the first book in a new field of study: Pirate Psychology
About the Book Cover
The Cover of this book, the (Unofficial) Pirate: Quest for the Mystic Bootye, shows the archetypal pirate Hero dropping-in to the adventure of Life, always with a smile on his face. He is supported by a rope that represents the convergence of the collective strands of his biological, cultural, and psychological heritage. The colored spheres indicate the various levels in the total spectrum of consciousness that are possible for the soul (psyche).* The Hero experiences all of them along the Way in his continuing Quest to obtain the Treasure.
He hangs on with the left arm while slashing out with the right to make his point. This speaks to the concept of polarities, including such concepts as: intuition vs. logic, safety vs. risk, the individual vs. the group, inner vs. outer, etc. The Quest consists of a Voyage that involves the The Ascent of the soul, or Return to the Above, after successfully overcoming the challenges of life. This is symbolized by the Golden (Pirate) Ship which magically sails through the Realm. The image on the cover represents a concise summary of the hermetic journey of the Hero that occurs on the Journey, in every moment, and throughout a lifetime.
The Way of the Pirate in this Quest for Treasure is the Hero's Journey as seen though the "pirate lens." It explores the psycho-dynamics of pirates and piracy in the individual and culture of all ages.
[The picture on the cover was created by the author using elements from the following: Here Errol Flynn is shown in the role of Captain Blood from the cover of the video tape Captain Blood ©1935 Turner Entertainment Co., a Time Warner Company (Package Artwork, Design and Summary ©2001 Turner Entertainment Co. and Warner Home Video). The pirate ship that magically turns into a golden vessel and sails through the sky symbolically represents the transformation that occurs in the Peter Pan story after the participants have overcome their adversaries. This is a visual quotation from Disney, W. (1986) Peter Pan, New York: Gallery Books, p. 90. Colored spheres are original.]
